Have you been told you need a tooth extraction? Maybe you have a painful molar or wisdom tooth that has been ravaged by a deep cavity. At Lake Lanier Smiles, we are your affordable Buford, GA dentist. Our team of talented dentists strive to give you the highest quality dental care at prices that won’t break you.

Do you have a painful tooth that interferes with your ability to speak, eat, or maintain your home and work routines? In many cases, a damaged tooth that causes a toothache can be restored with a root canal or other restoration. However, if the damage is severe, the tooth may simply need to be removed with a tooth extraction. Visit our Buford, GA dental office and we will let you know what can be done for your tooth: whether it can be restored or should be removed.

At Lake Lanier Smiles, you CAN afford an extraction at the low price of $119-169, for uninsured patients. Call us today at 770-831-0559 and ask about the extractions special.

Why Are Extractions Needed?

When a tooth has suffered a deep break or cavity, sometimes it cannot be saved by a filling, root canal, or other restoration. In some cases, there’s just not enough healthy tooth left to support a restoration. Sometimes a prior root canal fails and the tooth becomes re-infected.

In cases in which a painful abscess develops below a tooth, the infection can only heal after the tooth has been removed. Tooth extractions also prevent infection from spreading to other parts of the body and becoming a life-threatening condition. If you have a toothache that is accompanied by swelling (a puffed up, “chipmunk cheeks” appearance) or a fever, you most likely have developed an abscess and urgently need an extraction.

An extraction may also be needed:

  • For a badly broken tooth,

  • When you are getting dentures,

  • If severe gum disease has destabilized a tooth,

  • Before getting braces, or

  • When baby teeth are slow to come out.

What Happens During an Extraction?

For damaged erupted teeth, extractions are usually quick and painless affairs. Before we do anything, we will take x-rays to assess the state of the tooth. We will also administer a local anesthetic (such as Novocain) to ensure you feel no sensitivity during the tooth extraction. The dentist will then use a device called an elevator to loosen the tooth. Next, the tooth is gripped with a forceps and gently moved back and forth until it is loose enough to slide out. If the tooth is in pieces or is impacted, the procedure may be slightly different or we may need to refer you to an oral surgeon.

After Your Extraction

For simple extractions, most patients do not experience any significant pain and can get back to their routines quite quickly. Over-the-counter medications like Tylenol and Advil can help you manage any soreness, and a wad of soft clean gauze can be used to manage any bleeding from the hole.

If your extraction results in sutures, you will be given more detailed instructions for after care. For more detailed information, consult our page on dental extractions.

Replacing Your Tooth Afterwards

Unless it’s a wisdom tooth, we never extract an adult tooth without making sure you know the importance of getting it replaced. It’s always a good idea to replace lost teeth, as they increase your odds of losing more teeth in the future. Why? Because an empty space can change the way your teeth are aligned, as well as the way you bite down and chew your food. Over time, teeth may become cracked and enamel may become eroded in spots where the teeth don’t line up properly.

At Lake Lanier Smiles, we offer two form of tooth replacement: dental implants and fixed dental bridges. Ask us about these options after your extraction and we’ll explain the differences between the two. In general, dental implants cost more, but last longer and preserve your oral health better. Both are excellent options for tooth replacement that will look and feel natural in your mouth.

If you’ve been putting off a tooth extraction, come to Lake Lanier Smiles for a high-quality procedure at a great low price of just $119-169. Call us today at 770-831-0559 to make an appointment at our Buford, GA dental office!
